Derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, Yoga means union of the individual consciousness or soul with the Universal Consciousness or Spirit. Yoga is a 5000-year-old Indian body of knowledge. Though many think of yoga only as a physical exercise where people twist, turn, stretch, and breathe in the most complex ways.
The term “yoga” has been applied to a variety of practices and methods that includes:
1.‘Gyan Yoga’ or philosophy
2.‘Bhakti Yoga’ or path of devotional bliss
3.‘Karma Yoga’ or path of blissful action
Raja Yoga is further divided into eight parts also known as Ashtanga Yoga.
Sri Sri Yoga is a holistic way of life that integrates all elements of ancient knowledge of Yoga, to make a prayerful discipline uniting the body, mind and soul. Along with the series of simple, yet effective yoga postures and breathing techniques, a greater emphasis is placed on the inner experience of meditation, for the well-being of the mind and other hidden elements of human existence.
Pranayama is the extension and control of one’s breath. Practicing proper techniques of breathing can help bring more oxygen to the blood and brain, eventually helping control prana or the vital life energy. Pranayama also goes hand in hand with various yoga poses. The union of these two yogic principles is considered as the highest form of purification and self-discipline, covering both mind and body.
One of the beauties of the physical practice of yoga is that the poses support and sustain you no matter how old or young, or fit or frail, you come to your mat. As you age, your understanding of asana becomes more sophisticated. You move from working on the external alignment and mechanics of the pose to refining the inner actions to finally just being in the asana.
My first noticeable physical effect of doing yoga was increased flexibility and range of motion in joints. When I first started with the forward bend, my hands were level with my knees - my back was very inflexible. Now, my hands are fully on the floor, my forehead is at my knee level. My goal is to touch my forehead to my knees. Yoga practice has increased my strength because the postures use my own weight to resist itself in balance poses. Yoga has toned my muscles, so I wear my clothes better.
I love how I'm learning things about myself mentally, physically and spiritually and how they are all connected. Going through my daily life I find myself thinking about the things I learned during my yoga practice. Things like my breathing, posture, letting go of things I can't control and living in the present moment. Physically yoga has helped tremendously with my flexibility and strength. With my new eating plan and practicing yoga I have lost a little over 40 lbs.
I have really enjoyed exploring the different styles of yoga offered by Way to Yoga. I have practiced Hatha yoga, hot yoga and perhaps my favorite, power yoga. All have definitely enhanced my well-being, and aided my weight lifting and cardio performance because of increased strength, flexibility and focus. I have discovered that regular practice of yoga also helps me to deal with stress much better, and has enabled me to better concentrate and focus on solutions to problems.
